According to officials, the death toll from the earthquake in Nepal might grow to at least 128.

Nov. 4, Kathmandu (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake that slammed Nepal's western Jajarkot district on Saturday caused at least 128 deaths and several injuries, according to officials. The earthquake also caused buildings as far away as New Delhi in neighboring India to tremble.

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck on Friday at 11:47 p.m. (1802 GMT), according to Nepal's National Seismological Centre. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at 5.6, while the German Research Center for Geosciences downgraded it from 6.2 to 5.7.

This earthquake is the deadliest since two in the Himalayan nation in 2015 claimed around 9,000 lives. At a cost of $6 billion to the economy, entire cities, ancient temples, and other historic landmarks were reduced to rubble, and over a million homes were destroyed.

Since they were unable to make touch with the hilly region close to the epicentre, which is some 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, where tremors were also reported, officials feared that the number of fatalities from Friday's earthquake may increase. There are 190,000 people living in the area, which is made up of isolated hillside communities.

"It's possible that there will be hundreds of injuries and more fatalities," Jajarkot district officer Harish Chandra Sharma told Reuters over the phone.

According to police spokesman Kuber Kadayat, there were 36 fatalities in the nearby Rukum West district and 92 in the Jajarkot district in the Karnali province. The settlement of Ramidanda served as the epicentre.

An official from the prime minister's office stated that at least 85 people were hurt in Rukum West and 55 in Jajarkot. Meanwhile, Sharma stated that at least 50 people were hospitalized in Jajarkot alone.

"Many homes have fallen down, and many more have developed cracks. "Thousands of residents were too afraid to enter the cracked houses as aftershocks struck, so they spent the entire night in cold, open grounds," Sharma said. "I have myself not been able to go in."

In order to access the affected districts, search and rescue teams need to remove roads that have been blocked by landslides caused by the earthquake, according to police official Namaraj Bhattarai.

According to his office, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal rushed to the region early on Saturday to supervise search, rescue, and relief efforts with a 16-person army medical team.
